Momentum Builds for the I-794 Boulevard Alternative
The conversation around the future of I-794 is shifting. The decision about what should happen with the elevated structure has been long debated among residents, advocates, transportation professionals, and a few elected officials. The discussion has gained new attention following the joint statement from multiple Milwaukee Common Council members announcing their public support for the highway-to-boulevard (removal). This support signals growing political momentum behind a long-term community-led vision that could reshape the corridor for generations.
Three Milwaukee Common Council members, Alderman Alex Brower (District 3), Alderman Bob Bauman (District 4), and Alderwoman Sharlen P. Moore (District 10), have formally announced their support for the highway-to-boulevard (removal) option in a joint statement on Monday, July 13, voicing opposition to the mayor’s recent recommendation to maintain the elevated I-794 freeway.
The alders emphasized that the decision represents an opportunity to reconnect neighborhoods, improve access to the lakefront, create new housing and commercial development opportunities, and strengthen Milwaukee’s tax base. They strongly believe that the future of I-794 is represents an opportunity to make long-term investments in the city’s future, beyond just replacing aging infrastructure.
Since 2022, Rethink 794 has spoken to residents and local stakeholders to explore the broader vision. We have championed the boulevard alternative as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform underutilized public land into vibrant, walkable neighborhoods while maintaining transportation access. Preliminary concepts suggest the project could unlock approximately 16 acres unlocking publicly owned land pace for new homes, businesses, and public gathering.
As WisDOT continues its environmental review and public engagement process, this added political support reflects the growing interest in exploring how transportation investments can also advance other key issues facing Milwaukee like housing affordability, economic development, and neighborhood connectivity.
This new development brings renewed energy to the conversation around I-794 and demonstrates the diversity of perspectives shaping Milwaukee’s future.
