What could Milwaukee gain by rethinking I-794?

Join us for a conversation about what we can learn from Milwaukee’s highway history, the opportunities that could emerge along the I-794 corridor, and how communities can shape what comes next. We’ll explore lessons from the Park East freeway removal and hear from local voices about building a more connected and equitable Milwaukee.

Co-ordinated in partnership with the Center for Equity Practice and Planning Justice at the UW-Milwaukee School of Architecture and Urban Planning

Featured Speakers:

  • Ian Lockwood, Transportation Engineer, Toole Design

  • Peter Park, Former Milwaukee Planning Director

  • Dr. Kirk Harris, Founding Director, Center for Equity Practice and Planning Justice; UWM Associate Professor

What future can Milwaukee build with the land under I-794?

We've started a citywide conversation about how the decision on I-794 reaches beyond just transportation. It's an opportunity to ask how we can create a stronger future for Milwaukee residents and make the most of this public asset.

We're exploring the idea of  Community Wealth Fund which considers how value created through public assets can support long-term community benefits. The future of I-794 presents us the opportunity to explore this approach.

We're asking the big questions:

What should that future look like? Better public services? More affordable homeownership? Investment in neighborhood institutions, parks, and other community priorities?

We're continuing to invite Milwaukee residents to help shape this conversation. Share what matters to you and what you believe Milwaukee should prioritize as we consider the future of I-794 and the possibilities for building community wealth.
