In the Media: Mayor's Johnson's stance gaining national attention, and criticism

Mayor Cavalier Johnson's recommendation to retain an elevated I-794 connection has sparked discussion both in Milwaukee and nationally.

This week, Streetsblog USA writer Aaron Short featured Milwaukee's debate in an article titled "Milwaukee Mayor Abandons Highway Teardown To Calm Irrational Fears Of Driver Class". This coverage opens the I-794 to a broader national conversation about highway removal and downtown revitalization. The article examines the tradeoffs between preserving highway capacity and creating new opportunities for housing, economic development, and neighborhood connectivity.

Closer to home, Urban Milwaukee columnist Bruce Murphy questioned how the recommendation aligns with the city's long-term growth goals in piece for his column Murphy's Law titled "Mayor's I-794 Stance Betrays His Grow Milwaukee Goal." Murphy argues that preserving the elevated freeway could limit Milwaukee's ability to add residents, expand its tax base, and make the most of a once-in-a-generation redevelopment opportunity.

What this coverage calls into question, too, is the mayor's decision to back track on a position he took in 2022. Some may remember Mayor Johnson's interview with Dan Schafer of the Recombobulation area where he stated, "I'm going to be the proud urbanist...One of the things I think that I would really love to see in Milwaukee, and I'll be fighting for, is [tearing down] the spur between the Hoan Bridge and Marquette University and opening all that space up for development downtown".
