I am reaching out regarding the Wisconsin Department of Transportation's upcoming work on I-794. I support "Freeway Removal, Concept 2" as proposed by WisDOT. I-794 sits on 32.5 acres of the most valuable real estate in Wisconsin. Redevelopment could strengthen the tax base, create additional affordable housing stock, and better connect our neighborhoods.

 

WisDOT is preparing to make a $300 million investment in the status quo. This is an opportunity to reimagine a different future for I-794. Across the country, cities are rethinking downtown highways. The removal of the Park East Freeway shows what can happen when Milwaukee pushes for a different, better future. Instead of investing $300 million in an underutilized elevated freeway that divides two of Milwaukee's flagship neighborhoods, WisDOT should opt for a surface level boulevard along East Clybourn Street.

 

"Freeway Removal, Concept 2" will reconnect the street grid, strengthen the urban fabric of our communities, and create a healthier city, all for far less than the cost of replacing an elevated expressway.
