I am reaching out regarding the Wisconsin Department of Transportation's I-794 Lake Interchange Study. I support the Freeway removal and conversion to boulevard. I-794 sits on 9 acres of the most valuable real estate in Wisconsin. Redevelopment could strengthen the tax base, create additional affordable housing stock, and better connect our neighborhoods.

 

WisDOT is preparing to make a $300 million investment in the status quo. This is an opportunity to reimagine a different future for I-794. Across the country, cities are rethinking downtown highways. The removal of the Park East Freeway shows what can happen when Milwaukee pushes for a different, better future. Instead of investing $300 million in an underutilized elevated freeway that divides two of Milwaukee's flagship neighborhoods, WisDOT should opt for a surface level boulevard along East Clybourn Street.

 

"Freeway Removal, Concept 2" will reconnect the street grid, strengthen the urban fabric of our communities, and create a healthier city, all for far less than the cost of replacing an elevated expressway.
